Artist’s Statement    2026

“I work in both terracotta and white earthenware clay for its suppleness and strength and its proven willingness to be transformed both in form and colour.

Clay lets me explore and perhaps process both my personal experiences and my concerns about our planet. My muddy hands connect me to an organic art medium used by fellow artists since ancient times; I love tapping into something older, bigger and wiser than my naïve self.

My fortunate childhood was spent in Bengal, India. The vibrant ceremonies and rituals which celebrate the change- over of each season, which values the strong ties of family and friendship, and holds a deep reverence for animals has stayed with me. I have also retained a deep appreciation of things which enrich people’s daily life : food, utensils & tools, textiles, stories, books, flowers and plants; in my childhood I absorbed them  and made them my own.

As I grow old I find myself returning more and more to my roots and my memories for both my inspiration and a tactile form of self expression.”
