SUMMARY:"Clayz Of our Lives"
DESCRIPTION:“Clayz Of our Lives”\nAn exhibition by \nThe Box Hill Clayworkers . \nJane Dubsky\, Sally Adamson\, Sui Davies\, Frida Birkic\, Rod Hendley\, Wendy Smart\, Lee Bates \n 30 April to 13 June\, 2022 \n‘Box Hill Clayworkers are an eclectic group of potters who meet every Thursday at Box Hill Community Arts Centre. While creating individual pieces\, we support and inspire each other as well as solve the world’s problems’! \n \n \nWendy Smart \n“”I started my ceramic journey with a course at Adult Education\, onto a Bachelor of Arts (ceramics) and have been a member of Box Hill Clayworkers on and off since Box Hill Community Arts Centre Opened. At the moment\, I am enjoying making quirky earthenware coil-built sculptures and planters. I have always been drawn to bright colours and this love of colour is reflected in my pots. \n \n \n  \nJane Dubsky  \n“”I began pottery as a hobby after having my second daughter. In my previous life I worked as an editor and production assistant for book publishers\, Hill of Content\, Sun Books and Macmillan. At Macmillan I did the layout of the book “Australian Pottery” by Kenneth Hood and Wanda Garnsey\, and this started my interest in pottery. \nI attended several different hobby classes and workshops and then went to the Carlton Arts Centre to learn how to throw correctly. Since then\, I have taught several classes for children and adults and set up my own studio pottery – Banksia Pottery – at my home in Glen Iris. I am also a member of the Box Hill Clayworkers. \nI work with stoneware clay with very detailed\, labour-intensive hand-painted decoration\, mainly on functional ware. Most of the designs are of Australian flora and fauna. I draw on Aboriginal art\, Iznic art and many other traditions for inspirations for my designs\, as well as local gardens and travelling overseas. You can find out more about Jane at https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/jane-dubsky/ \n \nSui Davies  \n \nSusan Davies is a figurative sculptor who uses the female face and form to express an inner narrative. In her work she likes to show her figures emerging from the unformed clay  along with texture and surface decoration\, to give added meaning to the inner narrative she wishes to express. \n \nSally Adamson \n \nWhen making porcelain vases it is my intention to allow the hand building marks to become part of the surface texture. To accentuate these marks\, and the luminosity inherent in the porcelain\, I apply superfine layers of brightly coloured terra sigillata; an ancient ceramic technique used for sealing pots. I like that this technique is still being used today. \n  \nFrida Birkic \n \nMy passion with clay has always been influenced by oriental ceramics especially for their unique forms and classic glazes. As I am moving towards more contemporary styles\, I have been exploring different clay bodies\, testing new glazes and temperatures\, while still maintaining a minimal effect for their continual use in everyday life. \nRod Hendley  \n \nAfter a 35-year gap\, in 1989 I re-commenced working with ceramics in a school sponsored community group at Yarra Valley Grammar School\, specialising in stoneware both wheel-thrown and hand-built. I joined Box Hill Clayworkers in 2018 after finally retiring from the legal profession. \nI have continued to explore and learn over the past 30 odd years taking a special interest in glazes and the endless possibilities one can achieve in that area. \nI have also taken a keen interest in the mysterious world of pit kiln firing and the wonderfully spontaneous results one can achieve with what may be the most ancient of ceramic processes. \nThe sculptural possibilities of ceramic craft have also been of some interest to me but I have only scratched the surface of that branch of the arts. I now consider the world of ceramics my major pre-occupation and challenge. \n  \nLee Bates  \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:"Alice In Wonderland"
DESCRIPTION:A story told in sculpture and painting\nby Meredith Plain\, Lynne Foard and Lisa Hopper.\nMarch 18th to April 26th\nPlease join us to mark the opening of the exhibition at a \nTea Party \n4-6pm Sunday 20th March\nBolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art & Garden \n6 Manningham Rd W.\, Bulleen. \n \nAlice in Wonderland is an intriguing and wonderful story\, which we are all familiar with from our childhoods. It can be seen as an allegory or a dream\, or it can simply be enjoyed as a fantastical story you can lose yourself in. It is a rich seam of inspiration for artwork – from Arthur Boyd to Disney to children’s art projects. \nLynne\, Meredith and Lisa all found the Alice in Wonderland story a source for their art. Lynne Foard (more about Lynne) & Meredith Plain (more about Meredith)  have been friends since Lynne introduced  Meredith to the joys of working with clay while she was giving classes at the Eltham Living and Learning Centre in the late 80s. Lynne has since focussed most of her creative energy on painting. When Meredith told Lynne that she was submitting some characters from The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for the Melbourne Teapot exhibition she found out that Lynne was midway through a series of Alice in Wonderland paintings. Lynne then learned that Lisa\, her daughter\, who was just completing an art qualification\, was also working on the Alice theme.  So\, they decided to start planning this exhibition…. \nSo\, please come along and find out more. \nThe artists are: \nLynne Foard\nVibrant acrylic paintiongs by Lynne Foard. SUMMARY:Spring
DESCRIPTION:Artists include: Jenny Stokes\, Ann Cunningham\, Ann Jackson\, Sue Trevillian \,Donna Parker\, Robyn Carter\,  Jenny John \,  Jan O’Neill\, Di Beveridge\, Roz Harding\, Judy Searle\, Wendy Swan \n \nOur first exhibition in the Bolin Bolin Gallery after lockdown will feature the Eastern Studio Potters & Artists . This group has been exhibiting at Bulleen Art & Garden for many years. This year they are celebrating spring. The sense of new life and joy associated with spring is very apt this year. They have tackled this topic with  a diverse\, but unified body of work\, which includes Colourful ceramic “stacks” of many different sizes on a totem\, on a stake or hanging by Jenny Stokes; yellow sunflowers and plates with beach scenes by Jenny John\, a collection of sculptural ceramic rocks and pools by Donna Parker; a ceramic construction in chocolate clay by Robyn Carter; spirit houses in many shapes by Ann Jackson; vibrant oils by Wendy Swan; colourful paintings by Di Bbeveridge\, Roz Harding Sue Trevillian\, artist books by Ann Cunningham\, painting and small sculpture by Jan O’Neill \nThe Eastern Studio Potters & Artists \nWorking with clay is essentially a solitary pursuit. For this reason Eastern Studio Potters exists to provide connections between different potters. Members share knowledge and experience\, push the boundaries and ‘fire one another up’. Meetings\, workshops and shared exhibitions encourage and inspire members. This group was formed to provide this mutual support and inspiration many years ago when a group of potters had finished their studies. This has since extended to include painters – both potters who paint and new members of hte group. \nThe images below show some of the work which  features in their new exhibition. You can also see examples of some of their work from previous exhibitions here. 2014 \nJenny Stokes\n \nJenny John\n \nDi Beveridge\n \nAnne Jackson\n \n \nDonna Parker\n   \n\n\nRobyn Carter & Roz Harding\n \nJan O’Neill\n  \n \nAnn Cunningham & Di Beveridge\n \n\nWendy Swan\n \n\n  \n \nSetting Up

SUMMARY:Nicola Hoyle In the Sculpture Garden
DESCRIPTION:We will be celebrating the end (in part) of a very long lockdown with this outdoor exhibition from 22nd October when Melbourne’s retail can open outdoors! We can’t open the gallery yet\, but\, with this outdoor exhibition you will finally be able to get an art fix\, and see some of our local art up close and not on a screen. \nNicola has been working very hard for an exhibition in the Bolin Bolin Gallery this October\, which has not come to pass. Instead we will be able to show many of Nicola’s sculptures in this very appropriate garden setting. Nicola’s striking sculptures can tell a story using form and shape. \nNicola is one of our regular artists\, both exhibiting often and we have commissioned her to design and make the sculptural elements which give character to both our Sculpture Garden  and the Bolin Bolin Gallery itself. SUMMARY:Our Natural World
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of sculpture and images to celebrate our local nature discovered during lockdown. \n\n\n\nMeredith Plain\, Sandra Bain\, Heather Wilson\, Miss Stephanie\, Leah Lux Tame\, Giuseppe Raneri \n\n\n\n18th June to 8th August 2021 \n\n \n\nCeramic sculpture demonstration by Meredith Plain – 12 to 3pm\, Saturday 19th June \n\n\n\nBolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen art & Garden \n\n\n\n6 Manningham Rd West\, \n\n\n\nBulleen \n\n \n\n2020 was a disaster of year for most of us here in Victoria – bushfires followed by a pandemic. Unfortunately we have had another taste of lockdown again in 2021. One bright spot for any of us was our increasing discovery of and appreciation of the natural world in our own localities. We made the most of our “exercise” hour\, discovering all the arks and walks close to home. Some of us were lucky to be close to some bush or parks\, but we all seemed to relish what we could find. At Bulleen Art & Garden we have come to really appreciate being located on the banks of the Yarra River. hopefully this is something we can continue \n\n\n\nThe artists in this exhibition celebrate their appreciation of nature in a number of different ways – Meredith Plain and Heather Wilson use ceramic sculpture to show people and animals in a natural world\, Sandra Bain and Giuseppe Raneri through ceramics\, Stephanie Cobon prints photographs of our local bushland onto handmade paper\, Leah Lux Tame creates digital artworks and Miss Stephanie paints local insects which are an important part of our local world. \n\n\n\nMeredith Plain \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Yarra River\, including both near my home in Eltham and the Main Yarra Trail towards Bulleen Art & Garden has long been my happy place\, somewhere to go when I need to feel better . This has been even more important during the past 18 months. \n\n\n\nMy work for this exhibition reflects the natural world found there as illustrated by our local fauna. Also our increased use of the area whether it is walking along the river bank\, cycling along the bike trail\, quiet contemplation under a tree\, kayaking or playing with grandchildren near the Fairy Tree\, walking dogs. \n\n\n\nI have also had a focus on boats\, which have been a recurring motif. They have been brought to mind by the constant refrain of “all in the same boat” (or not?)\, have a reference to our journeys\, or more literally the river. \n\n\n\nSandra Bain \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandra Bain finished her art degree in the 80s. Since then she has taught art in schools\, travelled\, become a Mum\, and developed her art practice. Sandra is an art teacher who creates many of the vibrant mosaics to be found around Bulleen Art & Garden and also shares her skills through the mosaic workshops at Bulleen Art & Garden. \n\n\n\nSandra is also interested in drawing and recently she has been discovering clay as a medium\, as will be seen in this exhibition \n\n\n\nFind out more about Sandra at Sandra Bain » Bolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art & Garden (baag.com.au) \n\n\n\nHeather Wilson \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeather is an talented and experienced sculptor working in clay. Animals have always fascinated her and have been part of her work for more than 30 years. Most of her images have a basis in nature. Heather has regularly exhibited at Bulleen Art & Garden. Find out more about Heather. \n\n\n\nLeah Lux Tame \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeah Lux Tame has come to digital painting from a background of cartography\, fine art\, photography and botanical art. She has enjoyed the challenge of bringing the traditional techniques of drawing and watercolour painting into the digital realm using a stylus to paint / draw on an iPad.  During lockdown in 2020\, Leah’s focus was on her permaculture garden and her works often include insects and animals found there. Leah loves to include a decorative pattern as a background to express the joy in finding these small creatures \n\n\n\nMiss Stephanie \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMiss Stephanie is a Melbourne-based artist who specialises in realistic insect paintings. She takes inspiration from the natural world and her studies to create beautifully detailed watercolour paintings. \n\n\n\nAfter completing a Bachelor’s degree in Biological science Miss Stephanie travelled the world with her sketch book for 2 years\, discovering her distinctive style. When not painting Stephanie is usually working on her diploma in horticulture with a goal to work in habitat restoration. Fans of Miss Stephanie are impressed by her ability to use watercolour to create different effects that turn her insects from paintings to almost real. \n\n\n\nGiuseppe Raneri \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter an illustrious career as a ceramic artist where his best known artworks are the iconic tiled seats found on Brunswick street Fitzroy\, “Joe” can be found looking after the art\, craft and pots at Bulleen Art & Garden. \n\n\n\nWe are lucky to have some beautiful pots by Joe\, painted in his landscape style. \n\n\n\nMore images of the exhibition \n\n\n\n\n“Walk in the Park I” by Meredith Plain\n\n\n\n\n\nOwls by Heather Wilson\n\n\n\n\n\nOwls and Fish by Heather Wilson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“All in the Same Boat” and other works by Meredith Plain

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of textile art by Cary Leech \, baskets  by Jeanette Carter and visual art and glass by Jenie Yolland\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n30th April to 13 June 2021\n\n\n\n\n\nWe have your Mother’s Day gifts solved! A wide range of gifts for any budget.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese 3 friends met at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre. After a successful exhibition in the Bolin Bolin Gallery in 2019 (more about the previous exhibition) they have decided to once again exhibit together.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarly Leech\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarly has been working in textiles for 27 years\, starting as a weaver and silk painter.\n\n\n\n\n\nHer current work involves “drawing” with a sewing machine or free motion machine embroidery. She also explores 3D forms. The garden bowls were developed over a number of years\, working out the best sewing methods and flower stitching to the right stiffener.\n\n\n\n\n\nA lot of Carly’s work is inspired by nature\, colour and texture and mixing her different techniques together.\n\n\n\n\n\nCarly has been involved in previous exhibitions in the Bolin Bolin Gallery – Renewal in 2018 and Triple stitch in 2016. Find out more about Carly gallery.baag.com.au/?p=4268\n\n\n\n\n\nJeanette Carter\n\n\n\n\n\nJeanette is an art teacher and a fibre and clay artist who has been weaving baskets for 27 years. She was introduced to making traditional baskets in 1986 when she was awarded a teacher exchange to Pennsylvania USA for a year.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJeanette has exhibited in the Bolin Bolin Gallery numerous times and also takes basket weaving workshops at Bulleen Art & Garden\n\n\n\n\n\nFind out more about Jeanette and about the basket workshops\n\n\n\n\n\nJenie Yolland\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJenie began with a passion for watercolour painting\, and has also been working with kiln-formed glass for over 20 years. She is exhibited and collected widely.\n\n\n\n\n\nHer designs are directly inspired by nature soaring clouds\, heart-warming sunsets\, glistening raindrops on gum leaves\, even a macro photograph of chlorophyll cells. Jenie loves the interplay of contrasts; enlivening the final result with splashes of sparkling dichroic glass that sparkles and reflects sunlight in the most magical way.\n\n\n\n\n\nFind out more about Jenie and her previous exhibitions in 2015 \, 2016

SUMMARY:Nature's Forms
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “Nature’s Forms”\n\n\n\nIssa Ouattara and Melisa Savickas\n\n\n\n19 March to 26 April\n\n \n\nThis exhibition showcases two very different bodies of work which both highlight aspects of natural forms. There are differences in scale – from larger than life sculptures to microscopic detail; differences in media – sculpture and photography; differences in subject matter – from botanical and feather forms to figures. However\, both artists convey wonders of the natural world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIssa Ouattara\n\n\n\nIssa’s contemporary sculpture draws on his West African cultural and artistic heritage as well as his life experience to create large flowing  figurative sculptures and functional sculpt-artworks . \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn my contemporary sculptural expression I draw on my West African and artistic heritage and many life experiences to create unique sculptures and functional sculpt-artworks designed to evoke strong and positive feelings. The integration of the old/ancient and new/now is subconscious but clearly present. I love transforming the masculine media of mild steel to the feminine with flowing forms and soft dynamic curves embodied with feminine wisdom and power. …. Issa \n\n\n\nYou can find out more about Issa and more about his previous exhibition in the Bolin Bolin Gallery. \n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\n\, \n\n\n\nMelisa Savickas\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMelisa’s artworks are all centred around nature’s forms\, and mostly around Australian Native plants\, which she finds fascinating and beautiful. She examines the detail of the often unnoticed plant seed pods and blooms and uses her imagination to reinvent their appearance in her photography studio and again\, on her computer. Digital image creation allows a whole new conversation about the colours and forms to evolve.  \n\n\n\nMelisa’s interest in close up explorations of botanical and avian feather forms continues to inspire conversation about the environment and the beauty of native plant life. Some of her studies are transformed into acrylic and watercolour paintings\, which also enhance the forms that Mother Nature has provided\, with graphic style and bold strokes.  The artist is a professional photographer by trade\, and has learnt a myriad of techniques over several decades\, but has always found the natural world of great interest. She is now examining photo stacking and ultra-macro photography with still life\, with feathers\, insect wings and plant details her next area of focus \n\n\n\n\n1. SUMMARY:Collaborations
DESCRIPTION:Collaborations– \n\n\n\nAn Exhibition of Clay\, Metal and Painting by \n\n\n\nAnnette Nobes\, Mel Rayski-Mati \, Sandi Nicolaides \, Bruce McKay \n\n\n\n5th  February to 14th  March\, 2021 \n\n\n\nArtist Demonstrations – 1-3pm 20 and 27 February and 6 March 11 – 3pm \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n ‘Collaborations’ is an exhibition demonstrating the outcome of collaboration between four artists – two ceramicists\, a metal worker and an oil painter.  On display\, you will find a selection of each artist’s  individual work alongside a range of collaborative pieces\, such as designer porcelain plates containing Decal transfers of oil paintings and metal sculptures sporting ceramic elements.   \n\n\n\nDemonstrations: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to meet the artists and see how they make their work. \n\n\n\n\nAnnette Nobes on the pottery wheel – Saturday 20th and Saturday 27th February 1 to 3pm.\n Bruce Mackay on the pottery wheel and Mel Rayski-Mati with metal wire sculpture – Saturday 6th March 11am to 3pm\n\n\n\n\nThe Artists \n\n\n\nAnnette is a potter who produces a variety of work with specialisation in crystalline pottery. Crystalline pottery can be described as where art and alchemy meet. Crystalline glazes are specialty glazes that show distinct crystals in the fired glaze\, often of vibrant colors. Each piece is unique. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMel specialises in garden sculptures\, custom-made mirrors and 3D wall art . They’re made from hundreds or thousands of individual pieces that create large scale images and beautiful patterns. In 2018\, Mel was awarded the People’s Choice Award for Sculpture\, at the Melbourne Flower & Garden Show.  \n\n\n\n\nMetal flowers by Mel\, in front of one of Sandi’s paintings\n\n\n\n\nSandra worked in Theatre for several years before moving on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in sculpture. The 6 years ago she turned to oli painting. He unique intuitive style involves throwing paint on a canvas with a pallet knife then teasing out the figures she always finds in ther. All he paintings are about people interacting with each other and the audience.. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBruce’s love of ceramics began back in the 1980’s when he had the opportunity to study at Warrandyte’s well-known “Potter’s Cottage”. It was here that he first discovered the Japanese form of firing ceramic pieces known as Raku and this was to become his lifelong passion. This firing method\, in conjunction with a fascination for pottery from ancient civilisations\, has influenced Bruce to create pieces that are both wonderfully tactile and unique.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ncrystalline vase by Annette\n\n\n\n\n\nCollaboration – flowers – metal by Mel\, hand built ceramic by Annette\n\n\n\n\n\nCollaborative fountain – pot by Bruce\, metalwork by Mel\, also metal wall pieces by Mel and paintings by Annette.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSculpture by Mel\, flowers by Mel and Annette\, paintings by Sandra\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:New sculpture by Nicola Hoyle \n30 October to 29th November 2020  \nAn exhibition exploring shape and form\, predominantly using steel. \n  \nThis will be the first exhibition in the Bolin Bolin Gallery after lockdown. \n \n“By nature I am  a hoarder. As a result my  art is heavily influenced by recycled materials and found objects\, particularly scrap metal. I feel great pleasure at the prospect of turning outcasts into things of beauty. \nI am entirely self taught as an artist and enjoy the ongoing journey of discovery and exploration that my works brings. Prior to motherhood\, I was as a mechanical engineer in the automotive industry. I never felt fulfilled in this environment\, but perhaps my choice of vocation was the attraction to shiny materials and their assembly processes.” \nNicola is one of our regular artists\, both exhibiting often and adding to the the atmosphere at Bulleen Art & Garden. We have commissioned Nicola to design and make the sculptural elements which give character to both our Sculpture Garden (http://gallery.baag.com.au/?p=3479) and the Bolin Bolin Gallery itself. \nFind out more about Nicola.
