SUMMARY:Surface Tensions
DESCRIPTION: Surface Tensions\nAn exhibition featuring primarily ceramic art and also paintings by \nJennifer Sheridan\, Deb Gidley\, Anne Sfetkidis\, Eileen van Bavel\, Eva Vecciarelli\, Harry Kyriakou\, Josephine Cassar\, Leonie Magnuson\, Raelene Morley\, Shirley Busuttil \n7th March to 7th April\nExhibition Opening     5.30 to 7.30 12th March\nThis exhibition brings together a group of ten artists who share a communal studio in Eltham\, working across a range of practices. \nCeramic works vary from free-form sculptural pieces\, 2-dimensional wall art\, and functional homewares.  Paintings are strongly influenced by the beautiful bushland surrounding Eltham \nTogether\, the works reflect a balance between function and expression\, showing how practical objects and visual art can mesh beautifully together. \nBolin Bolin Gallery \nat Bulleen Art & Garden\n 6 Manningham Rd W\, Bulleen\, Victoria 3105 Australia \nPhone (03) 8850 3030 \nJosephine Cassar \nJosephine Cassar is a ceramic artist and educator and works from her home studio in Naarm/Melbourne. Her ceramic practice\, spanning over 20 years\, has been a journey of discovery and creativity. \nHer technical development and creative expression have been moulded through workshops\, residencies and artistic interactions and collaborations with expert ceramicists and artists both overseas and in Australia. \n  \nJosephine grew up on the Mediterranean island of Malta where she spent her formative years surrounded by the ruins of neolithic temples and centuries old architecture and art. \nIn her artistic expression\, Josephine navigates between her cultural roots and her lived experience in Australia.  She takes a minimalist approach playing with textures and the random application of glazes as an integral part of the creative process. \n  \n  \nRaelene Morley \nSeated at her pottery wheel in Greensborough is Raelene’s happy place. She rarely has a predetermined shape in mind and this makes the joy of creating very real. Handbuilding is another time when the clay takes the lead and with gentle guidance the form grows from a block of stoneware clay. \nBeautiful functional shapes invite beautiful glazes and underglaze painting. No planning\, no sketches: just the flowing movement of a brush. Her love of gardening sits nicely beside her love of pottery creation. Colours\, shapes\, textures are all around her. Raelene is known for her bubble decorations that have such a natural\, rhythmic flow. She loves making vases\, bowls and plates. \n  \nRaelene has showcased her ceramics at markets\, the Diversarty and Creative Industries exhibitions in Eltham\, and has featured as a solo artist in the Eltham Library community art space. She believes that every day she pots is another day when she learns. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJen Sheridan \nLike so many others\, Jen first fell for ceramics in high school. 45 years later\, arriving at a ceramics class in Eltham\, her hands still knew what to do. Over the last few years Jen has been a regular at the Eltham shared studio\, spent 3 weeks in a pottery studio in Japan\, and has exhibited her work several times. Focussing on handbuilding\, Jen uses coil and slab techniques to create works which are both functional and highly textured. Decorative elements often reflect the rocky soils and contours of the land. Each piece is finished with slips\, oxides and glazes using colours drawn from the Australian bush. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDebora Gidley \nDebora is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting\, ceramics and felting. Her work is colourful\, whimsical and often features animals. She focuses on strong colour\, clear forms and a sense of character in each piece. \nPainting and ceramics are her main mediums. Her paintings use layered colour and confident mark-making to create lively animal subjects. Her ceramic pieces are more art-focused than functional\, with sculptural forms and illustrated surfaces that give each work its own personality. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLeonie Magnuson \nLeonie Jane has been a maker for as long as she can remember\, always experimenting and finding new ways to express herself. Working with clay for the past seven years\, she is drawn to its endless possibilities — how a simple lump of earth can be shaped into forms both functional and sculptural. She enjoys combining different clay bodies for their natural textures and often leaves surfaces unglazed\, allowing the material’s raw character to remain present. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEileen van Bavel \nEileen has always loved painting and ceramics and is inspired by the amazing gum trees and flora surrounding Eltham . \nAnne Sfetkidis \n \nMy clay addiction began in the 70’s at the Carlton Arts Centre\, further fuelled by workshops at the old Northcote Pottery.\nI suppose I should mention that I taught ceramics and textiles in high school for about 40 years too.\nNext level addiction began at the Eltham Living & Learning Centre: best retirement move ever! I actually get to finish things now\, surrounded by an encouraging bunch of creatives. Sooo inspiring! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nShirley Busuttil \nAfter a thirty-year hiatus\, Montmorency-based artist Shirley has \nreturned to her lifelong love of hand-building. Her work is a \ntactile exploration of organic shapes and raw textures\, \ncharacterised by the subtle\, earthy tones of oxides rather than \nbright glazes. Every planter is unique\, reflecting Shirley’s belief \nthat ceramics should be functional\, natural\, and compliment \nwhat is growing within. \n  \n  \n  \nEva Vecchiarelli \nEva is a potter based in Greensborough\, Melbourne\, and has been making ceramics since 2021. Eva works mainly with porcelain clay to create both functional and sculptural pieces. Eva draws a lot of inspiration from Australian plants\, animals\, and landscapes\, and is deeply influenced by her love of nature. Each piece is handmade and designed to be used\, held\, and enjoyed as part of everyday life. Eva’s work is shared under the name Yellow Seed Designs \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHarry Kyriakou \nAs a relative newcomer to ceramics\, Harry Kyriakou creates functional art that reflects his deep connection to the natural world. In the past he has worked in architecture and graphic design and is currently a horticulturist and garden designer. \n  \nHis ceramics are hand built using clays such as White Raku and BRT. He employs various layering and glazing techniques to achieve tones and textures reminiscent of the natural environment. \n  \nHarry is inspired by Japanese aesthetics\, in particular the acceptance of transience and imperfection. \nHe is currently creating some new pieces for wood firing in March 2026. \n  \n  \n  \nMore images of the exhibition\nPaintings by Deb Gidley and ceramics by Raelene Morely and Eva Vecciarelli\n \n  \nPaintings by Eileen Van Bavel and Ceramics by Josephine Cassar\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nSetting Up

SUMMARY:‘Vibrant Visions’
DESCRIPTION:‘Vibrant Visions’    \nInspired by the beauty of land and sea\nPaintings by Marion Chapman and Jo Reitze sculpture by Tessa Wallis\n31st January  to 3rd March 2026\nMeet The Artists: 3-5pm\, Sunday 8th February 2026\n‘VIBRANT VISIONS’ celebrates the beauty of nature\, gardens and flowers. Bulleen Art &\nGarden is the perfect location for these three award-winning artists to exhibit their joyous paintings\nor sculptures that will delight all garden and art lovers. \n \nJo Reitze\n\nJo Reitze is based in Surrey Hills. She majored in painting under A.W. Harding at Melbourne State College. Jo is a Fellow of the Victorian Artists Society and Past President of MSWPS. Her teaching career culminated in her coordinating Art at Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College for 20 years. In 2005 she established Jo Reitze Paints your Garden\, painting numerous gardens on commission. \nSince retiring early\, Jo has also been Artist in Residence at Lon Retreat & Spa and at Cloudehill Gardens\, where she was filmed painting for ‘Put Colour in your Life.’\nJo’s over forty awards include both The McCubbin Oil Painting Award and the Best Landscape/ Seascape Award in Australian Guild of Realist Artists 50th Anniversary Exhibition last year\, MSWPS Jo Bennett Award for Works on Paper in 2024 and the prestigious A.M.E. Bale Prize for Works on Paper in 2022. Recent short-listings include the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize 2021 and Polish Art Foundation Contemporary Drawing Prize 2023. Reitze’s work is represented in Civic Collections in Victoria including those of Melbourne City\, Whitehorse and Monash Councils as well as private collections in Australia and overseas. (Full list in Profile)\nSHORT ARTIST STATEMENT\n“As a keen gardener\, my joyous paintings in oils or gouache or pen drawings celebrate nature and the restorative quality of gardens and gardening. My works are freely executed with lyrical mark-making to capture the essence of the scene rather than a mere photographic likeness. Many works are completed on location from direct observation while others are inspired by my iPad photographs. Strong tonal contrasts enhance the vibrancy of the colours while green hues unify the compositions. A close vantage\npoint is often selected to enclose the viewer in a beautiful setting .” \nEXHIBITION HISTORY\nI have exhibited widely in solo\, joint and group exhibitions. (See Exhibition Page www.joreitzeartist.com.au)\nI have sold numerous works up to $6000 in exhibitions as well as being commissioned to paint many\ngardens in Melbourne and beyond as well as recently a large oil of a golf course 110 x 167cm. \nMarion Chapman\n\nDiploma of Painting\, City & Guilds School of Art\, London 1982\nSir John Cass School of Art\, London 1978\nDiploma of Medical Technology\, RMIT 1972 \nMarion Chapman is based in Carnegie. After returning from studying and working in England\,\nshe took commissions for painting people’s gardens as well as for her own pleasure. After rearing\ntwo children she returned to her passion for art\, focusing on landscapes and gardens. Marion is a\nmember of the Victorian Artists Society and MSWPS.\nMarion has received a number of awards\, as well as being highly commended. She received the\nAnnie Davison Oliver Award in 2023.\nSHORT ARTIST STATEMENT\n“I lived in England for 10 years and was inspired by the English landscape and gardens\, working\nwithin a strong tradition of drawing and tonality. Having adored flowers and gardens since I was a\nchild\, and then having children of my own\, has enabled me to see my own environment and\ngarden as a source of artistic material\, without having to always go far afield. My goal is to\ncapture a sense of being or timelessness\, the essence of life – whether it is the randomness of\ntrees and flowers\, a landscape\, life around me or even still life! My focus is on the diversity of\ncolour and shapes to provide a uniform whole\, but also to seek out tensions that excite the\ninterest in the format. I attempt to reproduce my initial response or vision to what I see. My work\nhas evolved to become more colourful and free\, the seeming randomness of lines in the picture\nplane working to unify the elements.”\nEXHIBITION HISTORY\nI have exhibited widely in solo\, joint and group exhibitions.I recently staged a successful solo\nexhibition of 35 works at the Victorian Artists Society. \nTESSA WALLIS \nDESIGNER and CREATOR OF SCULPTURAL WORKS \nTessa works in bronze\, ceramics and glass and paper. SUMMARY:“Nature in Glass  and Paint.”
DESCRIPTION:“Nature in Glass  and Paint.”   \n Sandra Bain\, Tracy Andrews\, Anne Gellatly.               \n 22 August to 23 September 2025 \n Exhibition Opening             3-5pm         Sun 24th August \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n                     \nBolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art  & Garden \n6 Manningham Rd W.\, Bulleen. 88503030. \nwww.gallery.baag.com.au \nThese three artists have all approached the theme of nature using their quite different\, but complementary art practices. \nSandra Bain \nSandra has been making art for many years\, developing and extending her skills and expression. She has mainly worked using mosaics\, but sometimes also in ceramics and stone. She  is well known to many Bulleen Art & Garden customers – through a number of gallery exhibitions; mosaic workshops she ran for a number of years and her wonderful mosaic bowls on sale here. \nFor this exhibition she has once again taken the opportunity to tryi something different. \n“My work reveals a connection to nature through my love of birds and the freedom they represent “ \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTracy Andrews \nExplore Nature’s Beauty in Glass \nGet ready for an art exhibition that brings the beauty of nature to life through stunning glass artistry. Local glass artist Tracy Andrews is showcasing a collection inspired by nature’s vibrant colours and delicate forms. \nTracy focuses on the charming Australian Robins and Wrens\, capturing their vivid feathers and graceful presence in glass. The pieces also highlight the enchanting beauty of flowers\, birds\, and leaf patterns\, revealing the artist’s passion for nature’s elegance. \nWith a love for ocean life—like corals\, sponges\, seaweeds\, and fish—Tracy’s artwork captures the complexity of marine ecosystems. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAnne Gellatly \nAs a retired Art & Ceramics teacher\, I have recently returned to painting. \nI grew up in the Wimmera and have travelled extensively overseas\, occasionally selling artworks for one additional income. \nWhile I have lived in Melbourne for decades\, I enjoy exploring plants and the natural environment in my artworks. \nMy most recent works were inspired by a drive past my childhood home near the Wimmera River\, and my local green space\, the Urban Reserve Forest in Stonnington\, where I do volunteer gardening. \nI love using colour and texture in my acrylic paintings and while they’re initially based on observation\, I allow my intuition to guide me aesthetically. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMore Images

SUMMARY:"Earth's Tapestry"
DESCRIPTION:Earth’s Tapestry\nEllen Jenkins\, Anna Madyarova\, Jennifer Sheridan\n4 July – 19 Aug 2025\nExhibition Opening: 3-5pm Sun 6 July\nEarth’s Tapestry is a selection of paintings\, ceramics and textiles which draw upon the artists observations and experiences from the natural world: earth\, land and sea. \n  \nJennifer Sheridan\nJen’s functional ceramics reference the geological contours of the Earth’s crust\, with muted shades of ash\, yellow and ochre predominant. Jen finds herself consistently drawn to working creatively with and from nature\, and over many years has tinkered with basketmaking\, spinning wool\, dyeing\, textiles\, weaving\, gardening\, and now ceramics. Her work is strongly informed by the scrubby bushland\, the skeletal soils\, and the sharp contours of the land on which she lives and works. The thin soil contours of clay\, mudstone and sandstone are represented in the carved and matt-glazed surfaces of Jen’s work.\n \n  \n\nEllen Jenkins\nEllen’s sculptures celebrate the natural environment\, people and animals\, each one showcasing unique forms and movements. Inspired by the rich textures colours and patterns of nature\, Ellen uses clay to create a tactile connection with the natural world. This collection invites you to reflect on the beauty of our world and the life that weaves us all together. \n  \n  \nAnna Madyarova\nAnna’s textile art offers a softer counterpoint to the solidity of the clay sculptures and ceramics. Having moved to Australia from Europe over 20 years ago\, Anna is still fascinated by how its natural environment is different in geology\, colour\, light and texture. Her colour pencil drawings on wooden panels and hand-made paper capture the light and shadow of the landscape and the expressive eyes of its inhabitants in intricate detail. Each piece weaves together the textures and colours of Australia’s unique natural world\, offering a multi-sensory journey through its boundless beauty. These tactile artworks bring a more delicate\, textured dimension to the exhibition. Earth’s Tapestry Exhibition \n\n \n  \nTogether\, the works of the three artists reflect the Earth’s incredibly rich tapestry\, where form certainly follows function\, and incredible beauty triumphs over it all. \n  \n  \nMore images \n \n \n \n \n  \n

I have since become a tutor for beginner and intermediate art classes.  These classes allow me to share ideas and be inspired by others in a space that both nurtures and expands my knowledge of my art practice. \nI have exhibited and sold work at the following venues: Bridges Hurstbridge\, Eltham Art Show\, Streamline Publishing art space\, Eltham Leisure Centre \n  \n \n \n \nJOAN DENISON

DESCRIPTION:Eastern Studio Potters and Artists \nJenny Stokes\, Robyn Carter\, Ann Jackson\, Sue Trevillian \,Donna Parker\,  Jenny John \, Wendy Swan\,  Di Beveridge\,  Glenys McDonnel\, Jan O’Neil\, Carol Downey. \n 2nd to 26th November 2024 \nThis group has been exhibiting at Bulleen Art & Garden for many years\, and some of them also sell work here on a regular basis. \nThe exhibition includes original and creative works by artists with a wealth of experience. There is a range of ceramic works – from functional studio ceramics to ceramic sculpture\, as well as paintings an even some textiles this time. \n“Working with clay is essentially a solitary pursuit. For this reason Eastern Studio Potters exists to provide connections between different potters. Members share knowledge and experience\, push the boundaries and ‘fire one another up’. Meetings\, workshops and shared exhibitions encourage and inspire members. This group was formed to provide this mutual support and inspiration many years ago when a group of potters had finished their studies. This has since extended to include painters – both potters who paint and new members of the group.” \nYou can find out more about their previous exhibitions at Bulleen Art and Garden here   https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/eastern-studio-potters-and-artists \nSome images of each artist’s work are included in images below. \nRobyn Crter\, Jenny John\, Carol Downey\, Donna Parker\, Jan O’Neill\, Jenny Stokes\, Sue Trevillian. SUMMARY:Parallel
DESCRIPTION:Giuseppe Raneri and Pietro Giordano\n 28th September to 29th October \nExhibition Opening:5 to 7pm Thursday 3rd October 2024 \nThis new exhibition is a collaboration of two artists Giuseppe Raneri and Pietro Giordano who’ve known each other for a long time\, their friendship and appreciation for art has finally brought them together in this new exhibition. \nThe works include sculptures in wood and clay and paintings on board. This work is most suited to indoor use. \nGiuseppe Raneri\n \nI love art and its many manifestations that it can have\, it stimulates me\, spiritually\, intellectually and physically.\nMy approach to this new small body of work is striving towards simplicity\, and excited by its  immediacy.\nI’m enjoying working in different mediums\, drawing and sculpture both (clay and wood) and how the different materials can challenge the creative process. \nGiuseppe Raneri\, or Joe\, works at Bulleen Art & garden as his day job\, including working with art and pots\, but he is also a recognised original and gifted artist . \nHis main art focus has been in ceramic art and he had an exciting solo exhibition of his vibrant\, painted ceramics in the Bolin Bolin Gallery in 2023 https://gallery.baag.com.au/event/colours-of-the-sun-recent-works-by-giuseppe-raneri/ \nFor this year’s exhibition he has extended the range of his works with new media and new ideas. He has developed his interest in wood as a medium\, with sculptures in wood and painting on board\, as well as his ceramic sculpture. \nYou can also find out more about Joe at  https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/giuseppe-raneri/ \n  \nPietro Giordano \nI have always been very inspired by my surroundings and the continuous visual stimulation that it provides. From the earthy raw landscapes of my birth place Sicily to the vast and natural Australian environment and diversity of its people.\nThe narrative for my current work comes from ideas and visions derived from the words Journey People\, Place and Time ” The se thoughts and images are real and unreal\, abstract and figurative\, past present and future. They may be tranquil or tempestuous\, light or dark\, timid or bold \, perfect or imperfect.\nThese abstract sculptures and paintings are depicting the strong connection between the human entity \, the diversity of the natural and urban landscapes and the effects of ti me . This fusion creates ever evolving and varied experiences that become part of a continuous journey. \nPietro’s sculptures in this exhibition are made from wood\, with interesting surface texture. \nBiography\nFrom a very early age I have had the desire to do all things creative and I was always allowed the opportunity to explore these wonderful pursuits.\nBorn 1961 in Sicily\, Italy which gave me an upbringing of Mediterranean vitality and creative culture. My family migrated to Tasmania in the late 60’s and then my journey had truly begun with a very different lifestyle and culture. I saw it as an opportunity to explore creative ideas with a total freedom of expression.\nFollowing my school years\, I decided to commit to study in art and completed a BFA Degree at the School of Art\, University of Tasmania. My subject areas involved Ceramic Sculpture\, Painting and Drawing.\nAfter my studies I moved to Melbourne to gain more exposure and work with various artists .On receiving a Grant from the Crafts Board\, Australia Council\, I completed a 18 month residency at the Meat Market Craft Centre in Melbourne . This culminated in my first solo exhibition at Devise Gallery which was complimented by then starting my own studio practice.\nOver the years I have continued to work in various mediums and exhibited in a number of group exhibitions in Melbourne and interstate. I share this journey with my own wonderful family that are very supportive and also a great inspiration. \n \nMore Images from the Exhibition\n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:CONNECTIONS
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n10th August to 24th September 2024\nExhibition Opening 3pm\, 10 August\nMeet the artists and enjoy the exhibition \nTwo local artists explore the idea of connection through clay and printmaking. Ceramicist Jo Davies and printmaker Kate Herd pay testimony to the interdependence of\, and within\, nature and community. The artists are neighbours and both enjoy a longstanding relationship with the Yarra River landscape. Observing the micro and macro\, human and non-human worlds in their river-side ‘backyard’ over an extended period\, they consider the necessity of co-dependent networks – both social and ecological – for the health of our existence. \nThe artists see gardens as a locus for nature and community; Gardens both wild and cultivated provide stimulus for their artistic practice. For Jo and Kate\, gardens are not just living places of refuge and regeneration\, but also philosophically significant and symbolically laden landscapes of the mind. The works on paper and ceramic vessels might variously respond to the morphology of flowers\, plants and wildlife\, or the colours of foliage\, fungi and seedpods\, interspecies relationships or perhaps simply the play of shadows on branches. \n \nIn the Bolin Bolin Gallery space\, Jo’s sumptuous ceramic forms complement Kate’s mostly black and white linocuts and ethereal etchings; With Kate’s images providing a graphic background to Jo’s richly-glazed organic bowls\, bottles and assemblages. The forms of these vessels take on personalities and embody observations made in nature. Placed together\, the small ceramic elements seemingly communicate with each other. When presented in groups the assemblages reconceptualize landscape and relationships. Nature; The light falling between trees; A family photo; Family; Table chatter; Connections and relationships –all fuel Jo’s creativity. \n \nKate’s works on paper – in the form of drawings\, papercuts and etchings – reflect her love of flora and fauna and passion for gardens and the Australian bush. Her prints often feature plants\, birds and animals and posit the garden as a site of delight and contemplation but also as a place where senescence and death might intrude. The interplay between human and non-human living things in Kate’s whimsical images is a means to explore the imaginative world of childhood\, often referencing the rich symbolism of fairy tales and folk art. \nKate Herd\n \n \nJo Davies

SUMMARY:“Dogs Breakfast “
DESCRIPTION:Debora Gidley\, Eileen Van Bavel and Beverly Spiller \n2 Feb  to 24 March 2024 \nCeramics\, acrylic painting\,  encaustic painting\,  framed felting and soft sculpture by  three artists all working within the Eltham community. \nThey have chosen the exhibition title because off the variety of works and media by the three artist\, but they have put together a cohesive exhibition rather than a “Dogs Breakfast”! \nBeverly and Deb met when they exhibited together as part of art groups in Eltham . They decided to try another medium as part of their creative development which took them to a ceramics group . It was here they met Eileen who they instantly recognised was a kindred spirit . They work together every week as members of the Living and learning centre Eltham and have also exhibited together when the opportunity arises. \nDeb Gidley \n \n“I am a multi disciplinary artist . \nMy works include: \n\nPainting with multiple media using combinations of ink\, paper\, crayons\, pastel and paint.\nCeramics.\nFelting animals and 2D pictures .\nSculpting soft creatures with boiled wool\, silk and other natural materials.\nIllustrating using pen and ink.\n\nAt the moment I’m experimenting with twining different fibres like banana peel\, agapanthus and papyrus stems and teabags. If you have a close look at the nest you will find examples of some twining and lots of beautiful foraged seeds \,flowers and some surprises. I hope you enjoy my exhibition of colourful and varied pieces. \n\nBeverly Spiller\nI have worked and exhibited in acrylic \,mixed media \, encaustic and clay . \nHaving lived in inner Melbourne \,on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane my work tends sometimes to be urbane  and then reflect the colours of the tropics \nI have exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions in Maroochydore\, Brisbane and Melbourne ( Solo and group exhibitions at Montsalvat Eltham ) \nIt was when we returned to live in Melbourne that I met Deb and Eileen . \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEileen Van Bavel\nEileen has enjoyed many different media from clay to oil painting . \nHer paintings at the moment are featured around landscapes in Tasmania and gum trees and leaves she sees on her walks locally . \nHer work in clay is very free form and all hand built. Her pots are at times sculptural\, some depict landscapes and all are meant to be held and enjoyed . \nEileen has her paintings hanging in offices and homes in Melbourne and Sydney  and  awards  from Parade College and Hawthorn Art Society  \nBolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art  & Garden \n6 Manningham Rd W.\, Bulleen. 88503030. \nwww.gallery.baag.com.au \n  \n \n \nCeramics by Eileen Van Bavel \n  \nPainting by Eileen Van Bavel\n   \nBev Spiller\n \nDeb Gidley\nDeb Gidley\n \nPainting by Bev Spiller\nCeramic bowl by Debora Gidley\nEileen Van Bavel\n

SUMMARY:"Naturally Inspired"
DESCRIPTION:“Naturally Inspired” \nSculpture by Melissa Thomas \n  29 September to 30 October 2023        \n“Naturally Inspired” is an exhibition about the creativity that is found everywhere in nature. “I have made pieces of sculpture and art to complement the complexities of nature and the frugality of time in expressing my art work through metal and glass. Capturing a moment in time like a photo\, but in a 3D form. This expresses the movement and emotion of a subject or an object in the landscape of nature.” \nMelissa Thomas is a conceptual sculptor who lives and works in Melbourne Australia. She has been making Sculptures for over 25 years now. Predominately working with metal and glass\, but she has also used other mediums. She is inspired by the natural world\, so a lot of her work is the representation of animals and insects in their natural environment. Her experiences have lead to\, commissions for the Royal Botanic Gardens\, 15 topiary sculptures for the Melbourne Zoo and many other sculptures in public and private collections.  Also working with many Landscapers and creating pieces for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Her work is varied and is always evolving\, and some of the pieces are kinetic in nature   \nMelissa regularly sells her work and exhibits at Bulleen Art & Garden. So\, planning started for Neptune’s Grotto\, a topic which inspires us all. It  encompasses mythology; the many varied creatures and fantastical plants of the sea; the sense of freedom found in swimming through new worlds. We will be bringing in our interpretations of the watery world to create Neptune’s magical grotto in the Bolin Bolin Gallery – Neptune himself\, mermaids\, fish and other sea creatures …. \nLynne Foard (more about Lynne) & Meredith Plain (more about Meredith)  have been friends since Lynne introduced  Meredith to the joys of working with clay while she was giving classes at the Eltham Living and Learning Centre in the late 80s. Lynne is an accomplished ceramic artist\, but has  focussed most of her creative energy on painting in the last few years. SUMMARY:"Australia - Our Backyard"
DESCRIPTION:  \nCeramics\, sculpture and paintings by  Annette Nobes\, Bruce MacKay\, Mel Mayski-Rati\, Sharon Edwards \, Clare Dunstan\, Loris Meadows \n16th June to 8th August 2023 \nThese artists have been inspired by the flora and fauna of Australia\, which can often be found in their own backyards on the edge of Melbourne. \nCeramicists Annette Nobes\, Sharon Edwards and Bruce MacKay have all exhibited in the Bolin Bolin Gallery before. This year we also have botanical artist Loris Meadows and water colour artist Clare Dunstan exhibiting for the first time. \nClare Dunstan \n \nMelbourne Illustrator Clare Dunstan (Tog & Pini) creates beautiful artworks with watercolour paints as well as multimedia sculptures from polymer\, textiles\, found objects\, and acrylic paints. \nClare’s work invites you into her colourful world to meet with the charming characters created in her imagination. \n “I love to see the smiles on people’s faces as they look at my creations. That is my aim; to bring smiles and laughter.” \nClare’s family and menagerie of pets have been instrumental in fostering her love of visual arts and passion for animals. Now living in the leafy suburb of Research Clare works from her idyllic home studio with her kids\, husband\, chooks\, dogs and guineapigs. \n  \nSharon Edwards \n \nSharon Edwards has been practising ceramics on a professional level since 2000. Sharon has a wide diversity within her work; they range from whimsical sculptural pieces to all types of functional ware. She also works with porcelain clay producing fine intricate pieces. Sharon has been working from Barreenong Blu Studio for three years. \nFind out more about Sharon https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/sharon-edwards/ \n  \nBruce McKay \n \nBruce’s love of ceramics began back in the 1980’s when he had the opportunity to study at Warrandyte’s well-known “Potter’s Cottage”. It was here that he first discovered the Japanese form of firing ceramic pieces known as Raku and this was to become his lifelong passion.  \nThis firing method\, in conjunction with a fascination for pottery from ancient civilisations\, has influenced Bruce to create pieces that are both wonderfully tactile and unique. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLoris Meadows \n \nWith interests in art and science\, Loris struggled to find something absorbing to keep her busy in retirement. Hours of web browsing led her to the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne Art Programme. It provides the perfect combination; part science\, part aesthetic\, and requires an unending attention to detail. She endeavours to reveal a plant’s morphological structure with a three-dimensional quality. Artistic licence is freely taken within the bounds of scientific accuracy. \n  \nAnnette Nobes \n   \nAnnette is a potter who produces a variety of work with specialisation in crystalline pottery. Crystalline pottery can be described as where art and alchemy meet. Crystalline glazes are specialty glazes that show distinct crystals in\nthe fired glaze\, often of vibrant colors. Each piece is unique. \nFind out more about Annette https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/annette-nobes/ \n  \nMel Rayski-Mati \n \nMel specialises in custom-made mirrors\, 3D wall art and garden sculptures. They’re made from hundreds or thousands of individual pieces that create large scale images and beautiful patterns.  \nIn 2018\, Mel was awarded the People’s Choice Award for Sculpture\, at the Melbourne Flower & Garden Show.  \nFind out more about Mel https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/mel-rayski-mati/ \nAnd some more images… \n \n  \n  \n  \n       \n \n  \n \n \n \n     \n \n \n  \n \n \n          \n

SUMMARY:Trois Artisans - Basketry\, Textiles\, Glass
DESCRIPTION:  \nTrois Artisans – Jeanette Carter\, Carly Leech\, Jenie Yolland\nThese 3 friends met at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre and have decided once again to pool their talents for an exhibition. They are : \n \nCarly Leech\, whose work involves “drawing” with a sewing machine\, or free motion machine embroidery. She also explores 3d forms using this technique. (more info at ttps://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/carly-leech/) \nJeanette Carter a visual artist who enjoys working with clay and fibre. She was introduced to basket weaving during a teacher exchange to Pennsylvania in 1987 and has been prolifically weaving her baskets since then. For this exhibition she has submitted  a series of coiled circular wall hangings using a Mariposa stitch\, which are sculptural works of art. she has used mainly Autumn coloured fabric and cord and framed them with dried Jasmine vine. She has also been working on Random weave shapes made out of pea flower vine and cobbled baskets made from corn husk and colored fibre. \n(more info at https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/jeanette-carter/)\nJenie Yolland\, glass art who has been working with kiln formed glass for over 20 years. She has included a series of amusing and heartwarming representations of colourful glass fish following a recent trip to snorkle the Barrier Reef with her daughter\, some hitherto un-exhibited sculptural items in wrought iron stands\, some larger wall mounted glass designs\, and one or two large alcohol ink compositions. She loves glass and is inspired by nature\, sunsets\, raindrops\, gum leaves and much more. (more info at https://gallery.baag.com.au/portfolio/jenie-yolland/) \nThey have previously exhibited together in the gallery at Bulleen Art & Graden\, including : \n\n2021 https://gallery.baag.com.au/event/flourish-x-3/ ; \n2019 https://gallery.baag.com.au/trio-creative/\n2016    https://gallery.baag.com.au/triple-stitch/  2016  \n\n   More images form the exhibition \n  \n     \n             \n \n   \n \n \n  \n \n  \n  \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY: “Blue”
DESCRIPTION:      \nA group exhibition of ceramics\, painting\, sculpture \n17 March to 24 April    \nExhibition Opening : 5 to 7pm Thursday 16th March        \n                   \nExploring BLUE… the colour\, the mood\, the vibe…\nThis exhibition came about when Meredith put the call out for submissions for the Bolin Bolin Gallery.\nI thought it would be fun to get a merry band of artist together and respond to a theme. BLUE was\nthe word that popped into my mind. This is how we have all responded in our own unique way.\nEnjoy!\nAnn-Maree Gentile \nThe merry band of Artists: \nAnn-Maree Gentile\, Bec Yule\, Dawn Robinson\, Ingrid Dusselberg\, Ingrid Tufts\, Irianna Kanellopoulou\, Kathy Fahey\, Madeleine Thornton-Smith\, Marcia Rolfs\, Natalie Pirotta\, Nicola Hoyle\, Roma McLaughlin\, Sandy Angliss\, Sui Davies \n \nAnn-Maree Gentile –Ceramics\nThere’s a long tradition of blue in ceramics\, not that I make traditional ceramics. But it is a colour I gravitate to when decorating my quirky sculptures. And there’s so many glorious shades and names: cobalt\, electric\, baby\, cerulean\, periwinkle\, sky\, aegean. Here’s my offering of blue\, not designed to be blue but instead made to be joyous. \nBec Yule – Painting\nI’m a lover of colour\, so restricting myself to blue was a challenge… I was inspired by ceramic traditions of willow pattern and lustre highlights. I also wanted to explore whether introducing other colours made the blue stand out more. In the end I couldn’t just use blue! Hopefully these images will make you feel anything but blue… \nDawn Robinson –  Sculpture\nGeometric narratives exploring the relationship of shape & form\, light & dark\, positive & negative space by using hues & shades of BLUE – expressed through oil painting & sculptural forms. Glimpses and nuances of form finding. My intent is for the viewer to question their own subjectivity & applicability within the work. \nIngrid Dusselberg – Ceramic sculpture\nMy work depicts my love for our precious and totally unique wildlife\, which is sadly under threat. These amazing creatures are to me part of the most quintessential ‘true-blue’ Australian world\, which I am lucky to call home. \nIngrid Tufts – Ceramics\nBlue moon – the shapes of these plants pots are inspired by the shape of a full moon. Like a blue moon\, I only make pots occasionally. Unlike a blue moon\, these pots are actually blue. \nIrianna Kanellopoulou – Ceramics\nThese happy BLUE characters\, at times humorous and bizarre\, have an element of play\, mischief and wonder. It always fascinates me to see what characters will come forward from my collage approach to ceramics and what colour and shade of glaze they will choose. \nKathy Fahey – Painting\, Collage\nI am a painter and collage artist and one of the central motifs of my work is the landscape. It is easy to predominantly use blue whilst painting the sea but I thought the challenge of painting a landscape in only various shades of blue would be fun. Fun indeed but my hands kept itching to apply up some green\, yellow\, orange … the riot of colour I cannot resist using when I pick up a paintbrush. \nMadeleine Thornton-Smith – Ceramics\nWhen I think of blue in relation to ceramics\, I think of the long tradition of blue and white\, cobalt and porcelain\, travelling from Asia\, to Europe\, to Britain and back again to Australia. Since I was a child\, I have been drawn to the colour blue – maybe it reflects something in my personality\, or maybe I just didn’t want to be dressed in pink. These pieces are an exploration of blue in various guises: cast paintings in cobalt and Chun\, ceramic paint and polystyrene textures shattered and pieced back together onto a wooden panel (usually reserved for oil or acrylic)\, a non-traditional application of cobalt on to a blue gas-fired plate. Blue is the colour I use more than anything else in my practice. \nMarcia Rolfs – Painting\nI live in San Remo where I predominantly work as an abstract expressionist in acrylic and watercolour. My recent watercolour paintings named ‘Turbulence’ and ‘Cloudy Blues’ inspired by our exhibition’s title ‘Blue’ came into being during one of my more familiar ‘play sessions’ with watercolour and gouache. They reflects an impromptu desire to explore the colour of Indigo seen so often within the wild waves of familiar seaside and bayside scenes\, typical of my locale. \nNatalie Pirotta – Painting\nNatalie Pirotta is an artist who lives in Melbourne with a black cat with a bent tail. Her favourite colour is Prussian blue\, and during lockdown she painted walls in her house blue. These paintings represent moments at home with her cat during the long months lockdown. \nNicola Hoyle – Sculpture\nOrdinarily working in mild steel my sculptures are encouraged to rust giving them the earthly tones of warm brown and orange. With blue being the complementary colour to my regular work I decided to try my hand at a different assembly process that reflects the colour of the sky and sea. \nRoma McLaughlin  C- ut paper\nRoma McLaughlin is a papercut artist. Her latest work is inspired by the colour blue of the ocean\, off the Southern Coast of Victoria (traditionally owned by the Eastern Marr people). Roma uses a single sheet of paper and a scalpel to cut out shapes to form an interconnecting image. For her\, it is the shapes taken away from the paper which defines the patterns that aim to capture the sense of movement she observes in the ocean’s tides. Roma is a member of the international Paper Artists Collective and has been published in the V&A publication Papercrafts\, A Maker’s Guide. \nSandy Angliss – Painting\nSandy Angliss is an artist who lives and works near Dayelsford. She loves painting plants\, animals\, landscapes and still-lives. And\, she loves the colour midnight blue\, for her it is the colour of the night sky. \nSui Davies Ceramic sculpture\nIn my work as a ceramic sculptor the colour blue is one of my favoured muses. I use Blue to give my work a feeling of introspection\, serenity and quiet acceptance. It is the blue of reflection\, the blue of melancholy\, the blue of calmness and tranquility … qualities I try to express in my work \nAnn Maree Gentile \n   \n   \n \n \n \n \n \n \n        \n

DESCRIPTION:  \n GAIL STIFFE\, CECILIA SHARPLEY  and ROSALIND PRICE \n3 Feb  to 13 March\,\, 2023\nExhibition Opening: \n3-5pm Sunday 5th February\n  \nBolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art  & Garden \n6 Manningham Rd W.\, Bulleen. 88503030. \n \nThis exhibition brings together three artists whose work is inspired by nature and created from organic materials. We use plant matter to print and dye\, to weave\, to handmake paper for books\, pictures\, lampshades… Our focus here is on trees\, leaves\, and grasses\, and the rivers that sustain all life. \nPlants work hard for people. They provide food\, oxygen\, medicine\, pigments\, fuel\, fibre; they create habitat for other species; they improve soil\, store carbon\, help regulate climate… And they give us pleasure. In response\, we explore creative ways to work with plants. Like keen gardeners\, we’re fascinated by their forms\, textures\, colours\, and uses. We celebrate their beauty\, and relish the possibilities they offer for artistic expression that’s low-impact\, sustainable\, and recyclable. \nGAIL STIFFE  I’m a Melbourne artist with 40 years’ experience of papermaking. \nMy works in this exhibition were inspired by the Birrarung / Yarra River. Over the course of six months\, I took photos\, collected river water\, and foraged for fallen leaves\, bark\, and seed pods at more than twenty spots from Mt Baw Baw to Newport\, and on many tributaries. \nI soaked Zerkall paper in river water\, then steamed it with collected plant matter and an iron blanket to create leaf prints. The Birrarung collections came together in a 1m-long book; the tributaries inspired smaller books. I used my photos to make cyanotype prints. Embedding leaves and seedpods into very fine handmade paper\, then waxing the sheets\, I created delicate works reminiscent of a botanist’s specimen collection. I constructed canoes by folding eco-printed papers (kōzo\, Zerkall\, and handmade papers) and coating them with wax. \n \n  \nCECILIA SHARPLEY   \nI’m a papermaker\, bookbinder\, printmaker\, and calligrapher living in Healesville. With a background in hand-spinning\, weaving\, and dyeing\, I moved into lettering and handmade books\, exploring both traditional and sculptural book design. Next\, I ventured into making my own paper from plant fibre and recycled materials\, and used it to create books. My current focus is on eco-printing\, using eucalypt leaves for direct-contact dyeing onto felt\, silk and paper. My fascination with the effects of gum leaves on paper continues as I explore their magical range of colours and try to unlock the secret of why eucalypts of the same species produce such variations. \n \nROSALIND PRICE    \nI’m a forager and a fiddler\, a city-based person searching for connection with land and natural systems through drawing\, painting\, papermaking\, weaving\, and sculpture. I’m attracted to found materials\, particularly plants\, with their potential for new forms\, relationships\, and metaphoric charge. Sticks\, leaves\, seeds\, bark\, sand\, shells\, seaweed\, vine… I love the feel of them in my hands\, their ability to transform\, decay\, renew. My approach is a kind of collaborative play\, with me coaxing materials and materials guiding me. \n \nPrevious exhibitions and sales \n Gail Stiffe: Stonehouse Gallery\, Warrandyte; Alcove Art Shop\,  Box Hill; Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery at Gasworks\, Albert Park; Art Gallery on Darling\, Balmain; and many group exhibitions in Australia and overseas \n Cecilia Sharpley: YAVA Gallery & Arts Hub\, Healesville; Wyreena Arts Centre\, Croydon;\nWaterwheel Gallery\, Warburton; MiRa Regional Gallery\, Marysville; Tarrawarra Museum of Art\, Healesville; Stonehouse Gallery\, Warrandyte; Wyreena Arts Centre\, Croydon; Midnight Flowers\, Healesville \nRosalind Price: Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery at Gasworks in Albert Park; Linden Gallery\, St Kilda;  City Library Gallery\, Melbourne CBD; Collingwood Gallery\, Fitzroy; Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Collingwood; Gipps Street Gallery\, Richmond \n    \n  \n  \n     \n \nno images were found

SUMMARY:"Inspired by Gardens"
DESCRIPTION:Ceramics by Heather Wilson     \n8th October to 1st November : \nExhibition Opening: 4-6 pm Sunday 9th October 2022 \nBolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art & Garden\, open 7 days 9 to 5\n6 Manningham Rd W.\, Bulleen. 88503030. www.gallerybaag.com.au\n  \nThis exhibition showcases new work by Heather Wilson. Heather is a talented ceramic sculptor and we often feature her work in the Garden Gallery and she has had a number of previous exhibitions in the Gallery. Since the early 80s Heather has exhibited regularly in Melbourne with several one man shows. She has a B Ed Art & Craft\, have taught art and travelled extensively. Heather recently retired from art teaching and has had more time to experiment with new directions in her ceramic art\, and time in her garden. The exhibition will include her recognisable animals as well as planters and works inspired  by her garden plants. Many of her garden planters have been raku fired\, giving a distinctive lustre. \nArtist Statement for “Inspired by Gardens” \nThe work in this exhibition has been inspired by gardens and gardening. My partner and I moved house and studio nearly 3 years ago and I began gardening and looking at gardens in a far more serious way as we have an acre and a half. My sculptures went outdoors and the scale of things changed. We have visitors who bring dogs\, cats that wander through\, visiting foxes and rabbit’s\, resident lizards and I have built a pond to attract frogs. A multitude of different birds fly in and out as there are wetlands nearby and I started making birdbaths as bees kept drowning in the pool. \nOur car port has monstera plants and ferns growing in it and the big old maple tree provided the leaves to press into the clay for the maple pots and hangers. I wanted visually interesting pots to hang on the walls and refuse to look at black plastic\, sometimes I am happy if something cracks as then I can keep it. My monkey tail cacti are happily growing in a tree root hanger. I have more time to experiment and develop new shapes and found my plant pots growing to make sure the plants fit in well and have enough drainage. \nThe big pots are designed to be feature pieces in a garden and should be put in situ before filling them as they will be very heavy when full. The hangers can either be put up with screws or hooks. All the pieces can go either outdoors or inside. I fire my raku pieces in a rubbish bin kiln and the colours are created in the cooling process in bins filled with paper and cannot be repeated. \n \n.    \n   \n     \n    \n \n   \n   \n  \n        \n   \n \nBolin Bolin Gallery at Bulleen Art  & Garden\n6 Manningham Rd W.\, Bulleen. 88503030.
